Simply put, the word "doctrine" means "teaching" or "instruction." Studying doctrine gives us an orderly understanding of Biblical Truths. It grounds our faith firmly on the Word of God.
The supernatural origin and nature of the scriptures are essential to the life of every believer. The scriptures justify and prove their authenticity.
The Apostle Paul sums it up beautifully in II Timothy 3:16-17, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Knowing God as presented in the scriptures is essential. The world is filled with differing definitions, opinions of God's nature, and even denials of His existence.
The Bible challenges our doubts about His existence and nature. Its' scriptures clarify our understanding of who God is and draw us into a deeper understanding. Faith is built in this way.
"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." - Hebrews 11:6
Who is Satan? What was his original state as intended by God?
How did he fall? What were the results of his sin?
What is he doing now? Should we fear him?
What about demons and possession? What will their end be?
The scriptures answer these questions. God desires that we know enough about Satan and demons to live well.
We begin with God. Humanity was created by God's hand. Made in God's image, we are three-fold beings; spirit, soul, and body. As His image-bearers, we are intelligent, moral beings. We are dependent beings designed to be inhabited by the Spirit of God. We're made for His love.
Given free will, we fell from our good beginning.
The Doctrine of Man helps us answer questions, which help us understand foundational truths about ourselves.
• What were the effects of the fall?
• What is the condition of every man that is born into the world?
• What happens to man in redemption?
• What happens after the new birth?
• What is the ultimate destiny of man?
God alone defines what sin is. As found in scripture, the doctrine of sin presents God's righteous standard for humankind. This thorough study answers critical questions about sin.
• Where did sin originate?
• What is the extent of sin?
• What is the penalty for sin?
• What is the root of sin?
• What is the process of temptation and sin?
• What is the remedy for sin?
